Julio Aliaga

Journalist

Julio Aliaga is Telemundo Washington, DC’s news director, responsible for the direction and production of the station’s local Spanish-language evening newscast, Telenoticias.  He brings more than twenty years of outstanding international journalistic experience to Telemundo’s news department, where he oversees a staff of 15 journalists, producers and technical staff.  During his tenure at Telemundo Washington, DC, Julio Aliaga has implemented compelling features and segments in the newscast and has overseen the preparations for the launch of Telenoticias Última Edición.

Julio Aliaga was the London and Miami correspondent for CNN en español, as well as a Turner Broadcasting System executive and as the CNN editorial liaison at CNN+ in Madrid, Spain.  In 2000, he became CNN en español's bureau chief and senior correspondent in Washington, DC specializing in coverage of US political news, diplomatic relations between Latin America and Washington and other international events.

Julio Aliaga served as vice president of the News Division at Plural TV, a Peruvian media holding company that owns two TV channels: Canal N, a 24/7 cable news service and América TV, a broadcast station seen across the country. He managed more than 300 journalists between the two companies.  Julio Aliaga then worked as a journalism professor at Peru’s Pontificia Universidad Católica before returning to Washington, DC to assume the News Director position at Telemundo Washington, DC in 2006.

Julio Aliaga has traveled extensively in the US, Latin America, the Caribbean, Asia and Europe, covering some of the most important news stories during the past two decades.  These include Manuel Noriega's trial, Hurricane Andrew, the Cuban and Haiti rafter crises, Princess Diana's death, Augusto Pinochet's arrest and extradition trial, the 2000 US Presidential elections, and the September 11 terrorist attacks.

He won the George Foster Peabody Award in 1985 and the Guillermo Martínez-Márquez award in 1990. Julio Aliaga graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Journalism from San Francisco State University.  A native of Peru, he speaks Spanish and English.
